Doncaster Mile winner It’s Somewhat remains an outright $4.20 favourite in 2017 Doomben Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Articus ($4.80) and Sense Of Occasion ($9).

Will It’s Somewhat justify favouritism and win the 2017 Doomben Cup, or will one of his talented rivals post an upset?

1st

It’s Somewhat ($4.80)

It’s Somewhat has returned to the track in outstanding form this year and should prove extremely tough to beat in the rain-soaked Doomben Cup. A smart winner of the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) first-up in March, the Dynaformer gelding led from start to finish to win the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on Day 1 of The Championships, before arriving in Queensland for another win in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m). Drawn ideally in barrier 3, It’s Somewhat will be partnered by leading Godolphin hoop James Doyle and will relish the softer condition in Brisbane on Saturday.

2nd

Benzini ($26)

Kiwi raider Benzini is a proven performer in Brisbane and is another horse who should relish the damp conditions at Doomben this weekend. Winner of the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) most notably last winter, the Tale Of The Cat gelding continued to impress through the remainder of 2016, which included a trip to Hong Kong. Having resumed this year for second in the Group 1 New Zealand Stakes (2000m) on March 16th, Benzini worked to the line well for third in the Group 3 Canterbury Gold Cup (2000m) last time out and could very well receive the run of the race on Saturday from barrier 3.

3rd

Maurus ($13)

Consistent galloper Maurus is more than capable under the conditions of the Doomben Cup and is primed for another big run this weekend. Posting a career total six wins and a further ten minors through only twenty-four starts, the Medicean gelding ran a handy third in the Royal Randwick 100 (1400m) first-up before hitting the line well for third in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on May 6th. He has been charged with overcoming the wide and awkward barrier 16, but will be partnered by veteran Queensland hoop Damian Browne and should prove extremely tough to bat.
