Volkstok’n’Barrell Ready for 2016 Doomben Cup

Donna Logan is thrilled with the condition of Volkstok’n’Barrell, and is confident the multiple Group 1 winner is primed for success in Saturday’s featured 2016 Doomben Cup (2000m).

Volkstok’n’Barrell has returned to racing in slick form this year; running sixth in the Group 1 NRM Sprint (1400m) before taking out each of the Group 1 Haunui Farm Classic (1600m) and Group 1 New Zealand Stakes (2000m) in his homeland.

While failing to fire in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) upon crossing the ditch on April 2nd, the Tavistock gelding charged home for a credible third in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast a fortnight ago, and has reportedly taken plenty of benefit from the run.

“He really needed the hit out in the Hollindale. Volkstok’n’barrell got well back and had to make a long sweeping run,” Logan told AAP.

“The month between runs told at the end but I was very happy with the effort. In fact I was stoked.

“He is spot on. He has really tightened up and the track should suit him.”

A New Zealand-trained horse has not won the Doomben Cup since King Keitel saluted in the race’s 2001 edition, and Logan is hopeful of breaking the drought this weekend.

“We are overdue,” Logan added.

Volkstok’n’Barrell announced himself to the Australian racing community as a three-year-old through the 2015 edition of the Autumn Carnival; charging home to win the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) before running third in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m).

Failing to make much of an impact upon returning to Australia in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) in spring, Volkstok’n’Barrell was unable to beat a single runner home in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) on September 12th but improved well for fifth in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (2000m) most notably a fortnight later.
