Pornichet Primed for 2015 Doomben Cup Success

May 7th, 2015

Gai Waterhouse has been understandably thrilled with the form found by classy French import Pornichet this time in and is confident he will post a maiden victory at the highest level in Saturday’s featured Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) in Brisbane.

Pornichet took a couple of starts to find competitive condition this time in but returned to the winner’s circle in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) on March 28th third-up; progressing to a credible fifth in the major Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) before taking out last weekend’s Toowoomba Cup (2150m) with complete ease despite lugging a race-high 60.5kgs.

Particularly impressed by the Vespone gelding’s most recent competitive tilt, Waterhouse told Racing Ahead she is confident the conditions of the 2015 Doomben Cup will play directly into her runner’s strengths and is excited by the chances of success.

“I love back-up horses and I think this is a very exciting horse,” Waterhouse said.

“He’s got a lovely turn of foot. He won the race at Toowoomba at 800m and that’s a long way out.

“He absolutely toyed with his opposition and he’s done very well since then, he looks a picture and has settled into Queensland.

“He’s just really training well.”

Having purchased the four-year-old with a view towards major races, Waterhouse confirmed the 2015 Cox Plate (2040m) in spring remains the major long term target.

“As I said to them at Toowoomba, hopefully you’ll see him at the Cox Plate in October,” Waterhouse added.

Posting six wins and a further three minors through his 15 career starts so far, Pornichet more than stamped his claims as one to watch upon debuting to Australian racing in spring for a credible fourth in the Group 3 Yellowglen Stakes (1400m) before taking out the Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m) at a jog on November 15th.

Allocated the ideal barrier 4 and confirmed to be partnered by leading hoop Blake Shinn, Pornichet is currently rated outright favourite in 2015 Doomben Cup betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au at still-generous $4.20 odds.
