April 29th, 2015

Twenty talented runners have been included in nominations for the 2015 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m); highlighted by the pending appearance of some of the Autumn Carnival’s standouts and several previous winners at the highest level on May 9th.

Leebaz charged home to win the key form-indicating Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast last week and has been included in 2015 Doomben Cup nominations as a result.

Stamping his claims as one to watch over and impressive 2014 autumn and winter, Leebaz ran a close second to fellow nominee Weary in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) in early April; progressing to success in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) before finishing a close second to champion mare Streama in the Doomben Cup.

Having found sensational form leading into the Doomben Cup this time, the Zabeel gelding looks well positioned to go one better despite facing undoubtedly a better field this year.

Chris Waller is set to dominate the 2015 Doomben Cup final field after five of his stable stars in nominations, including Weary, Moriarty and Foreteller.

French import Weary has been unable to post much of a consistent run of form this time; winning the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) first-up this time but failing to make an impact in his three most recent starts.

Breaking through for a maiden Group 1 win in the Kingston Town Classic (1800m) in December, Moriarty will take huge benefit from the Hollindale Stakes and is sure to relish the step-up to 2000m.

Foreteller is a Group 1 winner over the distance but will need to draw a good barrier and have luck in running if he is to carry a seven-year-old’s weight to success in the 2015 Doomben Cup.

Undoubtedly leading the local charge, Sir Moments and Hopfgarten have both found winning form this time in and are proven performers on the Doomben surface.

A standout over the 2014 Brisbane winter, highlighted by wins in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) and Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1600m), Sir Moments jogged home to win the Listed Tails Stakes (1630m) on April 11th before running a close second in the Hollindale last weekend.

Winning the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) and Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) most notably last winter, Hopfgarten beat a talented field to the line in the Canadian Club Handicap (1350m) first-up this time before finishing second in the Tails Stakes most recently.

Noted Melbourne Cup competitors Green Moon and Precedence have also been included in 2015 Doomben Cup nominations.

The 2015 Doomben Cup final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday May 6th.
