2015 Doomben Cup a Possibility for Laser Hawk

April 15th, 2015

Trainer Joe Pride has revealed he will use results of Saturday’s featured Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick to decide whether or not to set Laser Hawk for a tilt at the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 9th.

A Group 1 winner, Laser Hawk began his racing career under the guidance of Gai Waterhouse but was transferred to the care of Pride after spending nearly two years in the paddock with a string of unfortunate ailments.

Having returned to racing this time for an impressive victory in the Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m) on March 18th, Pride told Racing Ahead he has been thrilled with the conditions of the Artie Schiller gelding in recent weeks and revealed he may back-up in next weekend’s Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m); the classic final tune-up event ahead of the Doomben Cup.

“It’s an afterthought with him because he was meant to run in the Doncaster but taking a slight step back,” Pride said.

“He’s been good and trialled really well here on Friday.

“We all know what a classy horse he is and that was a pretty moderate field but it was a nice to see him find his form that early in the preparation.

“He could back up in the Hollindale Cup and go to a Doomben Cup but we just want to see how he goes on Saturday first.”

Posting five wins and a further four minor place finishes through his 14 career starts, Laser Hawk undoubtedly found career-best form to date through the 2012 edition of the Autumn Carnival; highlighted by third place finishes in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) and Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) and success in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

Debuting for Pride with a credible run in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) on August 9th last year, Laser Hawk failed to beat a single runner home in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1400m) before running a close third in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) on September 20th.

Rated a $51 chance for success in Saturday’s All Aged Stakes with Ladbrokes.com.au, Laser Hawk is sure to relish a step-up to his pet distance of 2000m should he accept into the 2015 Doomben Cup.
