I’m Imposing Targets Doomben Cup 2015

A Sydney Summer Cup victory at Randwick on Boxing Day has Chris Waller’s evergreen veteran I’m Imposing on track for a Brisbane raid next winter including a shot at the 2015 Doomben Cup in May.

The now nine-year-old Danehill Dancer gelding won last year’s $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) and became the first successive winner of the handicap clash since Donald (1928-29) last Friday.

Backing up from a close second behind Rudy in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at the track a fortnight earlier, regular rider Tye Angland stayed on for another strong run with the duo winning their second feature of the season.

Before the Villiers Stakes they combined to win the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) on the back of a failure in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) when outclassed running 14th from a wide draw beaten 13 lengths by Hucklebuck in the Flemington feature on November 8.

Angland though had everything go his way in the Summer Cup getting back on the inside behind the speed before pushing up in the centre approaching the turn when three lengths off the leaders with the $3.30 Summer Cup favourite.

He eased the defending champ into the clear with 400m left to travel before hitting the front 400m from home and putting a nice margin of three-quarters of a length on the runner-up Midsummer Sun with Casino Dancer a nose further back for third.

The Summer Cup victory impressed Waller, I’m Imposing carrying the 59kg top weight to victory becoming just the second horse in over 100 years to cart more than 57kg to victory in the race, who now has the 2015 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival in his sights.

“All of his runs this prep have been good except in the Emirates Stakes (at Flemington) where there was a legitimate excuse with a lack of speed in the race,” Waller told TVN last week.

“It’s a good effort, just a great horse and obviously a great group of owners. It’s very rewarding as a couple of weeks ago we ran second in the Villiers and we went home with our heads between our knees, but you bounce back quick in this game.

“They don’t have to be the best horse in the stable but when a horse has been in the stable for a long time, it makes it more special.

“I’m already looking forward to next preparation. I would probably look at races like the Hollindale and Doomben Cup in the winter.”

The $300,000 Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) runs at the Gold Coast on Saturday May 2, seven days before Doomben Racecourse hosts the $650,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) – a double achieved by Streama in 2014.

Other recent Hollindale Stakes – Doomben Cup double winners include: Metal Bender (2010), Above Deck (2006), Mr Bureaucrat (2002), Might And Power (1998), Danewin (1995), Durbridge (1994) and Rough Habit (1991-92).
