2015 Doomben Cup Likely to Figure for Sertorius

December 9th, 2014

Securing several impressive results over the 2014 Autumn Carnival, trainer Jamie Edwards has revealed he is likely to skip the 2015 autumn with talented stayer Sertorius; instead favouring a tilt at Group 1 success through the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Claiming nine wins and a further 13 minor places from his 35 competitive appearances on course so far, Sertorius charged home to finish an impressive second in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) first-up this year; continuing to impress in finishing fifth in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and fourth in the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) before overcoming a rain-soaked, soft course to run third in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) on Day 2 of The Championships.

Unable to make an impact over four flat Spring Carnival starts most recently, peaking with a forgettable eighth on his home track in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) most recently, Edwards told AAP the featured Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) is likely to figure as the major target for the Galileo gelding upon his racing return in 2015.

“He didn’t have that turn of foot that he normally has,” Edwards said of Sertorius’ spring campaign.

“He raced in the Geelong Cup and raced well below par, so to the owner’s credit he let me put the horse in the paddock.

“That’s a pretty hard thing to do when you’ve got a chance of running in the Melbourne Cup, irrespective of how the horse is going.

“We’ve looked at what are the lesser grade Group One races this horse could run in and it’s probably the Brisbane winter carnival.

“We’ll let him have a really good break and then we might take him up to Queensland for the Hollindale Cup, the Doomben Cup and those sorts of races.

“They’re the second tier of Group One races and rather than going back to Sydney and running really good fourths, which is all well and good, we’re in the game to win.”
