May 14th, 2014

A particularly talented field of ten has been confirmed to line up for the featured 2014 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) in Brisbane this weekend, highlighted by several notable performers over the Autumn Racing Carnival.

Confirmed to retire into a breeding career come spring, trainer Guy Walter has accepted a position in the final field of the Doomben Cup for champion mare Streama.

A standout performer in each of her racing preparations since debuting in the autumn of 2011, Streama was particularly impressive over spring of the same calendar; unlucky to finish third in the Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) first-up before claiming back-to-back victories in the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1400m), Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1500m) and breaking through for a maiden win at the highest level of Australian racing in the Group 1 Coolmore Flight Stakes (1600m).

Continuing to build in form and class throughout 2012, which included an impressive victory in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m), the Stratum mare arguably hit career best form throughout 2013; finishing outside the places just once in ten appearances and winning the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) most notably.

While allocated the slightly wide barrier 8, Walter is confident Streama’s class and big race experience will count for a lot in the 2014 Doomben Cup.

Trainer Chris Waller is set to be offered twice the chance of success in the 2014 Doomben Cup, having accepted positions in the final field for leading contenders Moriarty and Junoob.

Claiming an impressive total of ten wins and eleven places from 41 competitive starts to date, Moriarty is yet to hit peak condition over six races this season, but has steadily built to the task over recent appearances.

Unable to match the late pace of Appearance when eighth in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) first-up on February 8th, the Clodovil gelding finishing third amongst classy competition in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) on February 22nd, but was unable to figure in contention in either of the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) or Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).

Finishing fifth in each of his two most recent races, Waller is confident barrier 7 poses the perfect chance for Moriarty to claim a maiden Group 1 title this weekend, particularly with in-form jockey Craig Newitt on board.

Unable to justify favouritism when fourth in the Hollindale Stakes last time out, Junoob is offered prime position to return to the winner’s circle this weekend, having been confirmed to be partnered by leading jockey Nash Rawiller and allocated the ideal barrier 3.

Claiming four wins from five starts prior to the Hollindale, the Haafhd gelding is more than a chance to claim the 2014 Doomben Cup if figuring in ideal position rounding the final bend.

A standout performer of the in-form Team Hawkes stable throughout autumn, Leebaz was arguably the biggest winner of all leading contenders in the Doomben Cup final field at Wednesday’s barrier draw; allocated the ideal gate 2.

Yet to contest an event at Group 1 level, the Zabeel gelding has without doubt received the ideal lead-up over his four race starts this season; winning two minor events with ease first-up and placing an unlucky second to Weary in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) on April 5th before comfortably winning the featured Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) last time out on May 3rd.

Confirmed to be partnered by in-form jockey James McDonald, Leebaz is a great chance of success in the 2014 Doomben Cup, and represents sensational value to punters at a current quote of $4.50.
