Streama Works Well Ahead of 2014 Doomben Cup

May 13th, 2014

Trainer Guy Walter is confident of a fourth Group 1 success for stable star Streama in this weekend’s featured Doomben Cup (2000m) in Brisbane, in one of the few remaining chances for the talented mare to secure victory at the highest level of Australian racing before retiring into a breeding career come the 2014 spring.

Breaking through for a maiden victory this preparation in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast last time out, Walter confirmed the Stratum mare had pulled up in perfect condition and has completed several strong pieces of work in the lead up to the Doomben Cup.

“She has come through the Hollindale in really good order” Walter told AAP.

“I went up to Brisbane to watch her work on Saturday morning and was very pleased.

“She will have a gallop on the course proper on Tuesday to top her off for the race.

“I think she is ready for the 2000 metres.”

A leading performer over each of her racing preparations since debuting on track in the autumn of 2011, Streama was a standout over spring of the same calendar; finishing third in the Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) first-up before securing three impressive victories back-to-back, including a maiden Group 1 title when strolling home to win the Coolmore Flight Stakes (1600m) by nearly seven lengths.

Continuing to build in class and experience throughout 2012, the mare out of Pensiamo was again a leading performer throughout the winter of 2013, unlucky not to claim a win but finishing third in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) and second in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) most notably.

Finishing in competitive position in all but one of her five appearances over the 2014 autumn, Streama more than stamped her claims as one to watching throughout the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival with her impressive and successful step up to 1800 in the Hollindale Stakes last time out; appearing to relish the raise in running distance.

Returning to peak condition, Streama is currently offered as equal $3.80 favourite in early betting markets for success in the 2014 Doomben Cup alongside in-form Team Hawkes runner Leebaz.
