Trainer Ciaron Maher has confirmed talented six-year-old Mr O’Ceirin will line up for this weekend’s featured Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) in prime condition after completing a strong piece of work in Brisbane on Tuesday morning.

Working well over just 1000 metres, Maher told TVN he is confident of his chances this weekend, in what is sure to be Mr O’Ceirin’s greatest test to date.

“He just went a 1000-metre working gallop but did it well and pulled up super” Maher said.

Producing an impressive turn of foot to finish just off the pace of Streama in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast last time out, Maher said the light rain forecasted for Brisbane later this week should play straight into the strengths of Mr O’Ceirin on Saturday.

“He has come through that (Hollindale Stakes) really well am I’m looking forward to Saturday” Maher said.

“I think they are predicting a little rain here on Friday so that wouldn’t hurt.

“The track was perfect this morning, about a ‘dead 5’, and if it’s like that or even a little softer on Saturday that would be ideal.”

Securing an impressive total of 10 wins and five places from 30 competitive starts to date, Mr O’Ceirin completed a particularly strong and consistent 2013 spring preparation; and while unlucky when blocked for a run in both the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m), claimed three impressive victories including both the Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) and Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) most notably.

Quickly building to the task this time in, the Postponed gelding overcame a disappointing run for eleventh in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) first-up with his strong performance in the Hollindale most recently.

Stamping his claims as one to watch throughout the 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, Mr O’Ceirin is currently featured as outright fifth favourite in early betting markets for success in the 2014 Doomben Cup, at a generous quote of $8.

A standout performer of the in-form Team Hawkes stable, Leebaz is currently tied $3.80 favourite with Streama to claim a maiden Group 1 victory in the Doomben Cup this weekend at short $3.80 odds, ahead of Akzar ($4.60) and Junoob ($5).
