2011 Doomben Cup Nominations Released

May 16th, 2011

The original 47 nominations for the 2011 Doomben Cup, which will take place this Saturday May 21, 2011, have now been dwindled down to just 18.

The 2011 Doomben Cup, which is worth $500,000, is run over 2,020 metres and is run under weight-for-age conditions.

Included in the Group 1 Doomben Cup nominations is Mick Price’s Heart Of Dreams, who finished fourth in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast last start.

The five-year-old gelding finished second by a nose to Typhoon Tracy in the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes earlier in the preparation, and won the Group 2 St George Stakes by two and a half lengths the start after.

The talented Show A Heart gelding will be stepping up to the 2,000 metre distance for just the second time in his career, after finishing eighth in the Group 1 Australian Cup at this distance.

Also included in the 2011 Doomben Cup nominations is Shoot Out, who finished fifth in the Hollindale Stakes after being disappointed for a run in the race.

Trainer John Wallace believes the bad result was not only due to the fact he was boxed in, but also because of the track.

“He got stopped a couple of times in the straight last start and probably should have finished second,” Wallace said.

”He really isn’t suited on the [Gold Coast] track and doesn’t like it. He never really got wound up last start.

Wallace believes that Shoot Out will have reached his peak horse racing form for Saturday’s Doomben Cup.

“I think the other horses probably had a little fitness edge last time as well because it was only his third run from a spell but I think he would have narrowed that gap by Saturday,” he said.

“This has been the race we targeted because it is a group 1 up here and it would be nice for him to knock it off.”

The trainer has made some changes to Shoot Out’s riding gear in the hope of making a winning difference.

”I have tinkered with his gear a bit and the winkers are worth a try,” Wallace said.

“He has been working good in them and they allow him to see that little bit more.

“I have no doubt he is still improving and he probably doesn’t need the blinkers now.”

Wallace is confident that Shoot Out will have a good winning chance come Saturday’s race.

“He is more relaxed and it will take a good one to beat him,” he said.

Also included in the 2011 Doomben Cup nominations are John Thompson’s Count Encosta, Roger James’ Firebolt, Chris Waller’s Triple Honour and Anthony Cumming’s Zavite.
