The Chris Waller-trained Metal Bender managed to fight back after a slow start in the $500,000 Group 1 Kirks Doomben Cup (2020m) on Saturday, to secure a heartfelt win in the latest Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival feature.
Starting as the odds-on favourite at $3.20 after their impressive last start win in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m), Danasinga gelding Metal Bender put in their all to overtake the Gai Waterhouse-trained Gold Water ($7.50) in the final stride to win by a head, with Metal Bender’s stablemate Triple Honour ($12) running a determined and promising third a further short-half-head back.

Road To Rock, the $3.70 second elect having his swansong race before heading to stud, finished fourth.
