2010 Doomben Cup Nominations

May 17th, 2010

This Saturday the action and excitement of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival continues at Doomben as the esteemed course hosts the Kirks Doomben Cup Raceday.

The scheduled highlight at the meeting will be the $500,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2020m), where 16 horses have been nominated for the weight-for-age showdown.

Rosehill-based trainer Chris Waller has nominated two of his stable stars for the 2010 Doomben Cup, including the early pre-race favourite Metal Bender.

The four-year-old Danasinga gelding was impressive last start over 1800m when he won the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast, beating Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Road To Rock.

Metal Bender, currently paying $3 through Ladbrokes.com.au before the barrier draw, will again face off against Anthony Cumming’s Road To Rock on Saturday as the in-form galloper has also been nominated for the Doomben Cup.

Waller’s other nominee is also the third favourite at $3.50 with Ladbrokes.com.au, Honours List gelding Triple Honour. Triple Honour ran a gallant second to Road To Rock last start in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on April 24, but hasn’t had a start since.

Other top gallopers nominated for Saturday’s Doomben Cup include Gai Waterhouse’s Choisir mare Gold Water, the Lee Freedman-trained Doctor Fremantle and Grahame Begg’s Pagan Princess.

A sensational line-up that includes seven Group status races is planned for Saturday at Doomben.

Other highlights will be the $150,000 Champagne Classic (1200m) for two-year-olds, the $175,000 Group 3 Doomben Roses (2020m) for three-year-old fillies, and the other weight-for-age feature, the $100,000 Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1615m).

The final field for the 2010 Doomben Cup will be announced later in the week and published here.
