Doomben Cup History

The Doomben Cup race is one of the best weight-for-age staying races in Australia. It was initially conducted as a principal race held over 10 furlongs (from 1933 to 1937). From 1938 onwards, the distance was increased to eleven furlongs. It was converted into a Group 1 race from 1980. Golden Rhapsody was the winner in that year. The Doomben Cup race was held over a distance of 2160 metes for one year in 1989. Abstraction won the championship in that year.

The most notable winner of the Doomben Cup was Rough Habit who won the race a record three times from 1991 – 1993.
